Dental injury care

Falls and knocks to the face often injure teeth, and the sooner a child sees the dentist, the better the chance of saving the tooth. The dentist examines the teeth and gums, orders an X-ray if needed and gives help straight away. An injured tooth needs monitoring, so follow-up visits are arranged.

When to see the dentist urgently

  • A tooth is chipped, broken or knocked out
  • A tooth has changed colour or feels loose
  • A gum bleeds or a tooth hurts after a knock
  • The child can't close the teeth together as usual
  • There was an injury and the tooth doesn't hurt, but time has passed and a check-up is needed

How the visit goes

  1. First aid

Before the visit it helps to calm the child and rinse the mouth with clean water. A knocked-out permanent tooth is held by the crown and brought in milk or saline. A knocked-out baby tooth is not put back, and the child should be seen by a dentist.

  2. Examination

The dentist examines the teeth, gums and bite and orders an X-ray if needed.

  3. Treatment

The dentist restores a chip, splints a loose tooth or helps as the situation requires.

  4. Monitoring

Follow-up visits are arranged: after an injury a tooth needs time to show how it is healing.

Questions about tooth injuries

About first aid, urgent visits and monitoring after an injury.

What to do if a child knocks out a tooth?

A permanent tooth should be held by the crown without touching the root, rinsed if dirty and brought to the dentist as soon as possible in milk or saline. A knocked-out baby tooth is not put back, and the child should be seen by a dentist.

Is a visit needed if the tooth doesn’t hurt?

Yes. After a knock the damage can be hidden and the effects show up later. A check-up and follow-up visits help to spot it in time.

How long does an urgent visit take?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes. The dentist sees the child on the same day and explains what happens next.

A tooth turned dark after a knock, is that dangerous?

Darkening can mean damage to the nerve. The child should see a dentist, who will decide whether treatment is needed.

Can a check-up after an injury be booked in advance?

Yes, but with a chip, a loose tooth, bleeding or strong pain it is better to come straight away and mention by phone that there was an injury.

What follow-up visits are needed after an injury?

Usually the first check is arranged after a few weeks, then after a few months. The schedule depends on the type of injury, and the dentist sets it.
