Adaptation visit

An adaptation visit lets a child meet the dentist and the room without treatment and without fear. The dentist shows the chair and the tools, explains what will happen and, when the child is ready, examines the teeth. A parent stays close the whole time.

When an adaptation visit helps

  • The child has never been to a dentist
  • A previous visit left a bad impression
  • The child is afraid of the chair, the tools or the sounds
  • The child should get used to the dentist before treatment
  • The child is under three

How the visit goes

  1. Meeting

The child and parent meet the dentist, and the child can bring a favourite toy.

  2. The room and the tools

The dentist shows the chair and the tools, explains them through play and lets the child touch them.

  3. Examination

If the child is ready, the dentist examines the teeth and gums. If not, the examination moves to the next visit.

  4. Summary for parents

The dentist talks about the condition of the teeth and suggests a plan for further visits.
